Flatbed pays well because it's harder than pulling a van, and the hardest part is doing securement right every single time. Get it wrong and you're looking at a violation, a shifted load, or worse. Here are the flatbed load securement basics that keep your freight on the deck and you out of trouble.
Working load limit math you actually need
Every strap, chain, binder, and anchor point has a working load limit (WLL) — the rated safe amount it can hold. The federal rule (FMCSA 393) is simple in concept: the total WLL of all your securement must equal at least half the weight of the cargo.
So a 40,000 lb load needs at least 20,000 lb of combined WLL holding it down.
A few rules that trip people up:
- The WLL of a tiedown is the lowest-rated component in the assembly — strap, hook, winch, or anchor point, whichever is weakest.
- A 4-inch strap is commonly rated around 5,400 lb WLL, but check the tag — ratings vary by manufacturer.
- You also need enough tiedowns by count and spacing, not just total WLL. Long articles need a tiedown roughly every 10 feet, plus rules for the front and rear.
When in doubt, add another strap. Nobody ever got a violation for over-securing.
Straps vs. chains: pick the right tool
Straps (webbing tiedowns) are for finished, lighter, or surface-sensitive freight — lumber, wrapped building materials, palletized goods. They grip well and won't scar the product, but they cut on sharp edges and don't like heat or abrasion.
Chains and binders are for heavy, rough, or hot loads — steel coils, machinery, pipe, equipment. Grade 70 transport chain is the standard; know its WLL by size (3/8" chain is commonly around 6,600 lb WLL).
Match the securement to the freight, not to what's already on your truck. If you run mixed flatbed and step-deck freight, carry both.
Edge protection and tarping
Edge protection isn't optional — it's required anywhere a tiedown touches an edge that could cut or crush it. Corner protectors and V-boards also spread pressure so straps hold tension. Cheap plastic corners cost a dollar; a failed strap costs a load.
Tarping is its own skill. Basics that save you:
- Tarp before you're tired — do it right at the shipper, not on the shoulder.
- Bungee and rope so nothing flaps at highway speed; a loose tarp shreds fast.
- Keep tarps clean and folded so you're not fighting a frozen wad at 5 a.m.
The inspection habits that prevent violations
Securement fails between stops, not just at loading. Build the habit:
- Inspect within the first 50 miles and re-tension — loads settle.
- Re-check every 150 miles or 3 hours, and every time you stop.
- Walk the load looking for frayed webbing, cracked hooks, and bent binders. Retire anything questionable.
