One of the most common questions from drivers thinking about going owner-operator: do I have to buy a trailer too? The short answer is no. You have a few paths, and the right one depends on your budget and how you want to run.

Option 1: Bring your own trailer

If you already own a trailer, running it gives you the most control and the lowest ongoing cost per week. You are responsible for its maintenance, but you are not paying anyone to use it. With ARI you are always welcome to run your own equipment.

Option 2: Run power-only

Plenty of owner-operators run just the truck and pull the shipper's or carrier's trailers. No trailer to buy, finance, or maintain โ€” lower overhead, more flexibility. The trade-off is you depend on trailers being available where you run.

Option 3: Use a trailer program

Many carriers offer trailers through a rental or partner program for a weekly cost. It is the fastest way to get rolling if you do not own one and do not want power-only. ARI works with trusted partners across dry van, reefer, flatbed, step deck, RGN, and Conestoga.

How to choose

  • Own a trailer already? Run it โ€” lowest cost.
  • Want the lowest overhead? Power-only.
  • Need a trailer to start now? A program gets you moving this week.

You do not need to own a trailer to start earning โ€” you need a truck, a CDL, and a carrier that gives you options. See how to get started with ARI.
