Short answer for most owner-operators who sleep in the truck regularly: yes. But the math depends on how you run.
What an APU actually does
An auxiliary power unit is a small secondary engine (diesel) or battery/electric system that powers your cab's heat, AC, and accessories without idling your main engine. Instead of burning roughly a gallon an hour idling a 15-liter engine, a diesel APU sips a fraction of that. Battery APUs burn zero fuel while running.
The payoff shows up in three places:

Is an APU for semi trucks worth it? The honest math
Run the numbers on your own habits, not a brochure's. Ask:
- How many nights a month do you sleep in the truck?
- How many hours per night would you otherwise idle?
- What's your average diesel price?
A driver who spends 15–20 nights a month out, idling 8–10 hours a night, saves a meaningful chunk of fuel every week. Stack that on top of the wear you're not putting on the main engine, plus anti-idling fines you avoid in states that restrict idling, and a diesel APU often pays for itself inside a couple of seasons.
Where it gets thinner: if you're home most nights, or you park somewhere with shore power, an APU sits unused. Be honest about your lifestyle before you spend the money.
Putting one on an older truck
APUs shine on trucks you plan to keep. Before you install on an older tractor, weigh:
Weight and space
A diesel APU adds a few hundred pounds and needs frame-rail room. On a heavy-haul or scale-tight operation, that matters.
Diesel vs. battery-electric
Diesel APUs run indefinitely and handle extreme heat and cold better. Battery-electric units are quieter, maintenance-light, and burn no fuel — but runtime is limited on the hottest and coldest nights.
Maintenance
A diesel APU is a second engine. It needs oil changes and filters. Factor that in, but it's minor next to the fuel it saves.
Resale
A truck with a working APU tends to sell easier and shows fewer idle hours on the main engine — a real plus if you upgrade in a few years.
Stack it with the rest of your fuel strategy
