You already have your Class A. The real question is whether adding an endorsement actually puts more money in your pocket, or just costs you a testing fee and a background check for freight you'll never haul.

Here's an honest look at which CDL endorsements that pay more are worth chasing as an owner-operator, and which ones usually aren't.

The endorsements that consistently open higher-paying freight

H — Hazmat

Hazmat is the single most valuable endorsement for most owner-operators. It unlocks freight a lot of drivers can't legally touch, which means less competition and stronger rates on those lanes.

  • What it takes: a written test, a TSA background check, and fingerprinting. Renewal is required (typically every few years, varies by state).
  • Why it pays: shippers pay a premium for the smaller pool of qualified, compliant drivers.

N — Tanker

Tanker work (liquids and some bulk) pays well and pairs powerfully with hazmat. The combined X endorsement (hazmat + tanker) opens some of the best-paying freight on the road.

  • What it takes: a written test only for tanker; the hazmat piece adds the background check.
  • Why it pays: handling characteristics (surge, load shift) narrow the qualified driver pool.

T — Doubles/Triples

Useful in specific regional and LTL-style operations. It's a cheap written test, so if it fits the lanes you want to run, it's low-risk to add.

Endorsements that rarely pay off for a leased-on operation

Not every endorsement moves the needle for an owner-operator hauling under a carrier's authority.

  • P (Passenger) and S (School Bus): these are for people-moving, not freight. No reason to carry them for over-the-road truck work.

Skip anything that doesn't match the freight you actually plan to haul. An endorsement only earns its keep when you run the loads it unlocks.

Endorsements matter less if the freight isn't there

Here's the part most articles skip: an endorsement is only as valuable as your access to the freight it unlocks. A hazmat card doesn't help if you can't consistently book hazmat loads at good rates.

That's where running under an established carrier changes the math. Because ARI moves real volume and has steady shipper and broker relationships, a hazmat or tanker endorsement actually turns into booked, higher-paying loads — not just a line on your license. You're leased on and running under ARI's own DOT/MC authority, with a dedicated dispatcher (never more than seven trucks) who knows which of your endorsements to match to premium freight.

You still choose your loads. No forced dispatch, and if you find your own hazmat or tanker customer, tell your dispatcher and ARI runs their credit and books it under ARI's authority.

How to decide before you spend the money

  • Match to lanes: pick endorsements for freight you'll realistically run, not "just in case."
  • Start with H, then N: hazmat first, add tanker for the combined X if the freight fits.
  • Factor renewal: hazmat requires a repeat background check — plan for it.
  • Confirm demand: ask about real load availability in your lanes before testing.

If you've got the endorsements — or you're about to earn them — the next move is making sure they translate into loads that actually pay. Talk to an ARI dispatcher about matching your qualifications to premium freight, or call (888) 600-9098.
